Sears registered the Craftsman trademark on May 20, 1927. Arthur Barrows was the head of the hardware department at the company and purchased the rights to the name Craftsman from the Marion-Craftsman Tool Company, reportedly for $500. The brand's first customers were mostly farmers. As America entered the automobile age, Tom Dunlap, Barrows' successor added chrome plating and improved the quality of the tools.

Craftsman Professional, Craftsman Industrial, and Snap on are compared to brands such as Cornwell Quality Tools and Matco. Craftsman's standard line is said to be comparable in quality with other mid-price brands like UltraPro (NAPA), Westward and Husky, as well as Kobalt.

Originaly, the lowest tier was called "Sears". From the 1930s to the 1950s, the company used the name "Dunlap" for lower quality tools. In the late 1980s, the Sears tool range was discontinued and was replaced by the "Companion” tool line. In 2008, Companion's tool line was discontinued. The "Evolv", a tool line that focuses on DIYers and homeowners, was replaced. Evolv tools come with a lifetime warranty, but customers must have their original receipt in order to file a claim.
